In 2016 I was in Dutch’s stable. He was on rest due to his ongoing lameness issues. I was feeling pretty down and upset, but spent the hour after grooming him just holding him. If he moved away I’d leave him be, but he would often seek out my touch to either hold his head, or rub soothing circles on his fore head, or brush over his eyes (which he loved most). It was about half an hour in when he turned around (to which I let him, we don’t force our horses in to anything) and looked for a safe place to lay down. And he did. Right at my feet. I sat down with him, and I held him for the next half hour, until he was ready to get up. This happened a few times in the following months. For the next few years it only happened 4 or 5 times. But mostly we’d be standing and spending (let’s call it healing time) healing time together. In 2021, they day before Dutch was leaving, I was obviously very upset. Dutch laid down with me, not once, but twice in an hour. We spent nearly two hours like this. Me holding him, just being with him, him laying down, standing up, munching some hay, me sat on the floor just appreciating this incredible beautiful soul that I’ve had the privilege of getting to know for 8+ years… him coming to lay down with me as I just sat there. I really cannot explain what this was that we did, it definitely was something magical. Energy’s mixing and matching, I’m not sure. I’m not sure anyone can explain what this was, but it was something brilliant bizarre. I’ve never felt such peace with anything, anyone, anytime, as I did when I was with him. So that’s how I made him lay down, but I have no idea how, or what was done.
